Quimby
& Associates was organized in 1985 by Bart Quimby as a means for
doing engineering work independent from other organizations that he was
involved with. Most of the time, it has been a one person shop,
dedicated to doing occasional projects of interest. Many of the
projects completed have made use of Bart’s advanced knowledge of
structures and arctic engineering.
The
firm grew to as many as five engineers and two support personnel during
the early 1990s as the focus was on facilities engineering projects for
the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). This was an interesting
time where significant projects were undertaken to evaluate and enhance
the integrity of TAPS. Projects included pipeline forensics,
bridge evaluations, facility upgrades, and more. During this
period, Quimby & Associates consisted of highly motivated and
competent engineers that were fun to work with. It was a golden
era of opportunity.
When Alyeska Pipeline
Service Company decided to go with a sole source engineering services
contract, Bart decided that it was time to shift to other priorities
and the firm was reduced in size again to being a single engineer
shop.
Since that time, Quimby
& Associates has provided supplemental professional opportunities
for Bart as he has relied on the University of Alaska Anchorage for his
primary employment. It has been a professionally rewarding
experience to be selective about the projects undertaken.
Currently
Quimby & Associates is engaged in (and interested in more) projects
requiring special structural engineering attention. Design
reviews for and consulting to/with other engineers makes up the
majority of the business. Other activities include some software
development for in-house or educational use. |
