Quimby
& Associates has a particular interest in unique and advanced
structural systems. A particular interest includes the design of
thin shell structures. Designs have included both concrete and
cold molded wood. Dr. Quimby has also developed and published
equations for the seismic analysis of hemispherical domes
structures. He has also developed software to the analysis and
design of domes.
Misc. Thin Shelled Dome Calculations.
Prepared calculations and provided consulting advice for a variety of
thin shelled domes used for housing, and fertilizer, grain, and cement
storage. Most jobs were done with Dr. Arnold Wilson, P.E.
Trinity Christian Center, Soldotna, Alaska.
Designed an 80' diameter thin shell concrete dome for a church.
This structure was the first thin shelled concrete structure to be
built in Alaska.
Bus Stop Shelter Concept, Anchorage, Alaska.
Conceptual design for a design competition. This design included a cold
molded hyperbolic parabaloid shell to give it a strong but light
system. As this design was not a winning entry to the design
competition, it was later built as a residential pavilion.
Bus Stop Shelter, Anchorage, Alaska.
The structural design for a winning entry in the Municipality of
Anchorage’s bus stop design competition. This project required
some innovative structural engineering to bring the architect’s vision
into reality.
